CYBER SECURITY ยท LEARNING IN PROGRESS

Safe practice, clear scope and honest learning notes.

This journal outlines my current study topics. Completed lab reports and screenshots are not published yet. I only practise in legal training environments or systems I have permission to use.

SCOPE

What I practise

My current focus is understanding how systems communicate and how security testing should be planned, scoped and documented.

  • Linux command-line basics
  • IP addressing, ports and common protocols
  • Nmap concepts and scan interpretation
  • Introductory web security and Burp Suite basics
  • Responsible testing in legal lab environments

RULES

Responsible approach

I do not test real websites, networks or accounts without permission. For each lab, I aim to record the target scope, commands used, observations and what I learned.

  • Define the allowed target before testing
  • Use training platforms or isolated lab machines
  • Take notes without exposing sensitive data
  • Explain results in plain English
  • Separate learning from real-world systems

CURRENT NOTES

Learning evidence to build on

Networking basics

I am learning how devices use IP addresses, ports and protocols to communicate, because security testing depends on understanding normal network behaviour first.

Nmap fundamentals

I am learning what scans can reveal in a lab, how to read open-port results and why scanning must only happen inside authorised scope.

Web security basics

I am studying how web requests work and how tools such as Burp Suite help inspect traffic in legal practice environments.

Documentation

I am building a habit of writing down the goal, method, result and next step for each exercise so the learning is visible and repeatable.

DOCUMENTATION FORMAT

How I will document completed labs

This is a report template, not a completed exercise. Each published report will connect the technical evidence to a clear explanation.

  1. Goal and date: State the question investigated and when the exercise was completed.
  2. Environment and scope: Identify the training lab and the systems authorised for testing.
  3. Method: Record the tools, commands and reasons for using them.
  4. Evidence: Include relevant output and annotated screenshots without credentials or personal data.
  5. Finding and mitigation: Explain what the result means, its limitations and how the issue could be addressed.
  6. Reflection: Describe what I learned and what I would investigate next.
